Understanding and Reducing Health Disparities

HHS/National Institutes of Health: Behavioral and Social Science Research – Purpose: To encourage behavioral and social science research on the causes and solutions to health and disabilities disparities in the U. S. population. Emphasis is placed on research in and among three broad areas of action: 1) public policy, 2) health care, and 3) disease/disability prevention. Particular attention is given to reducing “health gaps” among groups. Proposals that utilize an interdisciplinary approach, investigate multiple levels of analysis, incorporate a life-course perspective, and/or employ innovative methods such as system science or community-based participatory research are particularly encouraged.

Leveraging Existing Natural Experiments to Advance the Health of People with Severe Mental Illness (R24) Grant.

HHS/National Institutes of Health – People with severe mental illness (SMI) die from the same causes as those in the general population, e.g., heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, and pulmonary disease. However, these diseases are more common in people with SMI and lead to earlier death. The modifiable health risk factors that contribute to these issues are more common and have an earlier onset in people with SMI. Iatrogenic effects of psychiatric medications, which may include weight gain and metabolic disorder, add to these health risks. Effective interventions to reduce these common modifiable health risk factors exist for the general population.

Diabetes Prevention Program Grant

American Association of Diabetes Educators – ADE currently has funding opportunities available to organizations interested in participating in the AADE Diabetes Prevention Program (AADE DPP) AADE plans to make awards to organizations that currently operate diabetes self-management education programs and are interested in addressing diabetes prevention in their local communities and delivering the Lifestyle Change Program. Grant funding will support training and program start-up and also reimburse the AADE DPP Sites to deliver the Lifestyle Change Program to eligible participants.

2013 National Institute’s of Health (NIH) Clinical Center Summer Internship Program

HHS/National Institute of Health – The NIH Clinical Center (CC) Summer Internship Program offers summer internships to students who are U.S citizens or permanent residents and are currently enrolled in high school, college, graduate programs, and health professional schools including nursing and medicine.  At the Clinical Center— the nation’s largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research—students work with mentors who are researchers and health professionals; participate in the NIH Research Poster Festival with results generated by their work in this summer program; and attend weekly lectures presented by NIH investigators.
