Western Washington Area Health Education Center (AHEC )

Principal Investigator: Jodi Perlmutter, MSW, Assistant Director, Western Washington AHEC

Summary Statement of the Proposed Project:

First Steps into the Twenty-first Century is a project of the Western Washington Area Health Education Center (WWAHEC) to promote awareness of and access to biomedical information for Maternity Support Services (MSS) workers. These workers serve inner city, low- income and minority clients through the First Steps program. By designing a hands-on training program in partnership with MSS workers and regional medical staff, WWAHEC will expand their current access to medical library and electronic health information, including PubMed, Internet Grateful Med and MEDLINEplus. With access to the latest information at their fingertips, MSS workers can provide the best possible care for the clients.

Goal:
To promote awareness of and access to biomedical information for health professionals who are Maternity Support Services (MSS) workers, primarily from King County. The project will also include network coordinators from throughout the state who serve rural populations as well. By including the second group a secondary goal will be to encourage replication of the model throughout the state of Washington.

Objectives:
  1. Partner with the social work consultant from DOH to plan and promote a training program with the targeted audience.
  2. Partner with the Network Regional Coordinator for King County to plan and promote the program.
  3. Partner with the RML to design and implement a hands-on training on biomedical searching for the target audience as well as medically credible web-based searching, including PubMed and MEDLINEplus, and training on the HERE web-based clearinghouse.
  4. Partner with the RML network libraries to provide linkage to those unaffiliated and partially affiliated health professionals.
  5. Demonstrate the utility of online medical searching as well as well designed web searches.
  6. Promote life long learning for MSS workers in Washington State.
  7. Increase access to biomedical information for MSS workers, and better access to web-based searching.
