Dragonfly, Winter 2000 2000 Local Outreach Awards Available

"Providing equal access to biomedical information to all U.S. health professionals" is a goal of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM). One way the NN/LM seeks to accomplish this is through outreach. The focus of NN/LM PNR outreach efforts is primary care providers or public health workers, practicing in underserved areas or serving primarily minority populations.

The NN/LM PNR is pleased to announce funding for Local Outreach Awards for 2000-2001. This year, as with last, the proposal process is open to network member libraries and to outreach partner organizations. Partner organizations are non-profit health organizations or associations with outreach goals that are allied with those of the NN/LM PNR. The target audience of partner organization outreach efforts should be similar to that of the NN/LM PNR, as described above. Examples of outreach partners are the Northwest Regional Primary Care Association and similar organizations representing primary care providers, Area Health Education Centers, and state and local health departments. Any proposal targeting health professionals who lack adequate access to health library services and health information will be considered. However, those that address the NN/LM PNR's target outreach population will receive priority. NN/LM member libraries and outreach partner organizations from our region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) are invited to submit project proposals that will complement and extend the NN/LM outreach mission.

If you're still hesitating, wondering what you would do, then think about:

• providing hands-on information access training, including Internet, Internet Grateful Med, MEDLINEplus, or PubMed, to environmental health officers, public health nurses, or other public health workers in your area.
• doing an exhibit and presentation on "Strategies For Effective Web Searching For Professional Information" at the annual meeting of a state association for dentists, physician assistants, school nurses, or other health professionals without access to health library services.
• training local clinic workers, such as those in migrant worker or community clinics, to use the Internet effectively and then assisting them in developing a Web site.
• extending library service, including PubMed training and Loansome Doc services, to a nearby clinic, long-term care facility, or community agency not normally served by your library.

Applications are due April 15, 2000, and awards will be announced in May. The number of awards will vary depending on the number of proposals received, and their size and quality. We expect to fund three or four proposals of about $10,000 each. The period of project performance will begin after May 1, 2000, and cannot extend beyond March 31, 2001. Also, since these awards are purchase orders, funds will not be disbursed until invoices are presented for expenses incurred.
