The National Library of Medicine has announced awards to four Pacific Northwest libraries for Electronic Health Information for the Public projects. The National Library of Medicine is funding 49 projects in 34 states. The projects will be conducted as subcontracts of the Regional Medical Library contract and be active through April 30, 2001. Congratulations to the following four libraries!
Project Director: Nancy Griffin
Idaho Health Sciences Library/ISU proposes to work with 13 public libraries in small, rural communities in the southeastern part of the state. The IHSL librarian will train the public librarians in the use of NLM resources and making use of the IHSL services. The IHSL librarian will conduct town meetings in each of the small communities to assess health information needs and to raise awareness of available resources.
Project Director: Marcia Horner
Kootenai Medical Center is the strongest clinical and consumer health information resource in northern Idaho and has a long history of outreach to the surrounding area. Kootenai Medical Center plans to create a cooperative collection development policy among a partnership of community libraries (medical/health and public), providing training for public library staff in locating quality health information resources for their patrons, and enhancing access to local, regional, and national resources by developing a web portal for health services and information.
Project Director: Dolores Zegar Judkins
Oregon Health Sciences University is the major health science resource center for Oregon, with an established record of outreach to health professionals and consumers in the state. The goal of this project is to train school nurses in the use of PubMed and to familiarize them with web-based consumer/patient education resources so they can provide quality health information for teachers, students, and families. The project will be a joint effort with the Multnomah Educational Service District.
Project Director: Mark Alstead
The HIV/AIDS Resource Center and Library of Public Health-Seattle and King County proposes to create Web pages for gay men and lesbians about a broad range of non-HIV/AIDS health issues. The pages will link researchers, providers, and intervention/program developers serving sexual minorities to studies and data available through MEDLINE and other Internet resources. The agency will maintain and update the pages.
