From Bench to Bedside

Kootenai Medical Center

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Marcy Horner, M.S., Librarian

This 187-bed acute care facility is the referral center for the surrounding rural region of five counties of northern Idaho, parts of northeastern Washington, and parts of Montana. Led by Kootenai, the community hospitals of northern Idaho have formed the North Idaho Rural Health Consortium, an early project of which was to establish teleradiology links between the rural sites and radiologists at Kootenai.

Tom Legel, Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Kootenai Medical Center, Coeur d'Alene:

This networking project has opened up a world of access to information. It has been a tremendous help to us in accomplishing our vision.

We have been really successful with our teleradiology project [currently on a local network, but a candidate for Internet transmission in the near future]. It's mind-boggling to me that all those radiologists have teleradiology equipment in their homes so that they can view an x-ray from a remote hospital at any time.

You helped us work a little bit faster and a little bit harder to get where we want to be.
