From Bench to Bedside

Alaska Native Medical Center

Anchorage, Alaska

Judith Bendersky, M.S.L.I.S., Librarian

The Alaska Native Medical Center provides preventive and therapeutic health care to natives of Alaska -- Eskimos and Indians -- at the Anchorage facility and through a network of fifteen Indian health outposts throughout the state. The 150-bed hospital is also a teaching site for the University of Washingtons regional medical education program (the WAMI Program) and houses a Centers for Disease Control office.

Brian Trimble, M.D., Physician, Alaska Native Medical Center:

I use the Internet mainly for e-mail. I log on daily and communicate with colleagues around the world. Recently I chatted with one of my former professors at the University of Washington about new anticonvulsants and new drugs used to treat multiple sclerosis.

Judith Bendersky:
I've been getting the weather reports for travel destinations in Alaska. The travel agent here arranges for all travel for staff and patients. Travel information and conditions are of life and death importance here vis-a-vis Medevacs [the emergency airlift service].

I've checked the FDA Bulletin Board to answer questions about the status of drugs. For example, someone asked, "When is the FDA releasing Sumatriptan?"
