News Highlights from NLM

Becky Lyon, Head, National Network Office, NLM

Health Services Research

NLM's fiscal year (FY) 1994 appropriation will include substantial additional funding to support the new National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology, which was established by the 1993 NIH Revitalization Act. The Librarys existing Office of Health Services Research Information will be transformed into the Center. In September, Dr. Lindberg designated Betsy Humphreys as Assistant Director for Health Services Research Information to oversee the implementation of the new Center and the expansion of NLMs health services research information program. Ms. Humphreys will continue to serve as Deputy Associate Director, Library Operations, as well.

Online Services

The number of codes for use of NLMs online services increased 22% in FY 1993 to a total of 71,693. NTIS distributed 12,294 copies of GRATEFUL MED, up 15% from FY 1992. NLMs online users conducted 5,966,196 searches, up 7% from FY 1992. Connect hours were up 6%. In FY 1993, MEDLARS Management Section and the three RML Online Training Centers [including Linda Milgrom in our region] trained 1,511 people in 103 classes. Most of those trained are medical librarians.

DOCLINE and Loansome Doc

2,541 Network libraries entered 2.6 million requests into DOCLINE, an 11.6% increase from FY 1992. 12% of DOCLINE users are now using the Internet to access DOCLINE. NLMs share of the DOCLINE requests was 307,481, or only 1.7% more than the number received last year. 94% of all DOCLINE requests were filled. In FY 1993, the number of Loansome Doc users more than doubled to 4,891. Loansome Doc users requested a total of 103,627 documents, an average of 21 documents each.

[Editors reminder: DOCLINE is a system provided to libraries without charge by NLM; even telecommunications costs are completely covered by NLM. For this reason, where possible, the RML strongly encourages DOCLINE access over the Internet. If you want to know how, contact the RML.]
