Progress Notes HLIB-NW Discussion List

Maryanne Blake & Michael Boer

HLIB-NW, the Internet discussion list for biomedical and health sciences librarians in the Pacific Northwest, has been up and running for two months since its introduction on November 1, 1993. The end of the year is a good time to look at its statistics. Who's on? Who's not? How much and what is being said?

To satisfy our curiosity about how well HLIB-NW reaches its constituents, the list managers tentatively defined the target audience for HLIB-NW as individuals listed in the NN/LM PNR's Directory of Health Sciences Libraries database who have Internet addresses. Of the 696 individuals in the database, 213 (30.6%) are known to have Internet addresses and are thus members of the target audience. Due to account sharing or other odd situations, the current, known number of unique Internet addresses is 212. Of these 212 actual Internet addresses, 142 (or 67% of our target audience) have requested HLIB-NW subscriptions. In addition, there are 12 subscribers from outside the target audience, bringing the total subscriber base to 154.

The number of messages sent to the list was 27 in November and 49 in December -- almost a doubling of the number of messages, even with the holiday lull. Subjects of the messages included OnTyme cancellations, baby arrivals, address changes, the Internet video teleconference, and DOCLINE routing table changes. There was a discussion of appropriate uses of the HLIB-NW list and there were postings to the list about interesting Internet resources and interesting articles read. Several people asked for assistance from their colleagues in locating documents and in answering "stumper" reference questions.

If you are on the Internet and haven't yet joined the ranks of the HLIB-NWers you can enroll by sending a message to nnlm@u.washington.edu with your name, institution, job title, voice phone, and preferred Internet address. We will be happy to subscribe you. You can also find details about using the list in our "frequently asked questions" document, which is available via anonymous ftp:
