Flat-Rate Access to NLM for the American College of Cardiology

The National Library of Medicine and the American College of Cardiology have announced a cooperative agreement providing ACC members with unlimited access to the Library's databases, including MEDLINE, for an annual fixed fee of $200. This agreement was negotiated to provide ACC members with access to the literature of medicine for improved patient care and informed decision-making, and is similar to the earlier agreement with the American College of Physicians.

For the $200 fee, members will receive:

A copy of GRATEFUL MED, the NLM program that facilitates searching the NLM databases;

A user code which will allow entry into the system, as well as telephone numbers for local telephone access;

Toll-free user support from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. ET Monday-Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ET Saturday;

Unlimited access to MEDLINE and 40 other databases in areas such as cancer, toxicology, and AIDS;

Access to the NLM National Network of Libraries of Medicine, a regional program which links physicians with regional libraries to provide copies of articles (for an additional fee).

The GRATEFUL MED program can run on both IBM and Macintosh systems and a modem is required. Canadian users will need to pay an additional charge for telecommunications.

In announcing the agreement, ACC President Sylvan Lee Weinberg, said, "In addition to providing our members with convenient, reasonably-priced access to the medical literature, this service will promote computer literacy among our members."

This offer began November 1, 1993 and will run through October 31, 1994. The agreement may be extended at the end of the year, depending upon usage. For questions about the program, contact the Griffith Resource Library, American College of Cardiology, at 1-800-253-4636.
