What do information and data specialists need to know about research and tools for data management? What can researchers gain from working with librarians? What can we all gain from a better understanding of tools and technologies for data-intensive research? This forum will explore these questions and provide opportunities to network and interact with other information and data specialists. This event has three objectives:

  • Participants will gain increased awareness of the potential and challenges for computationally intensive science in health sciences research.
  • Participants will gain increased awareness of innovative tools and technologies for collaboration, discovery, data sharing and data management.
  • Participants will identify how librarians, data specialists, and researchers can use these concepts and resources to provide added value to their research community.

Our keynote speaker will be Victoria Stodden who will present a talk entitled: "Open Data, Open Methods, and the Promise of Large Scale Validation." It is well known that open data and methods promise improved reproducibility and reliability of research findings, but less well-known is the possibility for large scale validation of previously accepted results. This is especially promising for epidemiology and health risk assessment tests. In this talk Ms. Stodden will outline these developments and present tools that enable validation and reproducibility in computational science.

Attendees will also hear from panelists who will discuss innovative tools and services including eagle-i, VIVO, DMPTool, and REDCap. Participate in a focused discussion on opportunities for collaborations between researchers and librarians during live interactive sessions that link presenters and participants located in Portland, Seattle and Salt Lake City.
